An Out Of School Program For Kids in Irricana!! Finally

Party
There is a fantastic new program coming to the town of Irricana that will give assistance to working families in the town of Irricana and area.  Here is the press release that Monica Piros wrote for the local paper.

A grassroots organization founded by a group of working mothers is moving forward with plans to alleviate some of the stress faced by working families, by creating up to fifty spaces for the care of school-aged children residing in, and around the Township of Irricana.

The Irricana & District Family Lending Centre has reached an agreement with the Irricana Ag Society to house an out of school care program in the Irricana Recreation Complex beginning Tuesday, September 2nd, pending final licensing approval and the ability to procure sufficient staffing levels.

“Now that over a week’s worth of additional professional days has officially been added to the upcoming academic year, the timing is ideal for establishing a new program that will be able to serve a small portion of the children in the vicinity who fall under the jurisdiction of the Rocky View School Division,” says Monica Piros, who has served as the initiative’s Coordinator for the past three years.

Beginning in September of 2008, families with an annual gross income of $79,000 or less will be able to obtain government subsidies designed to offset the costs of enrolling children, aged five and up, in licensed programs that provide structured and safe environments prior to the start of classes, and in the hours immediately following their dismissal from school.

In the past, government assistance was only available to families whose children were enrolled in licensed daycare centres and approved family day homes, which in some cases are not able to offer programs for older children or choose not to since it is more profitable to reserve spots for younger children requiring eight hours of care in a day or more.

“Statistics show that children who are not adequately supervised between the hours of 3 and 6 pm are at dramatically increased risk for engaging in, or becoming victims of criminal activities, and they are also far more likely to participate in underage sexual behaviour and illicit drug use as well,” Piros continues.

Out of school care programs have reached a point in their evolution where they are playing a pivotal role in bridging home and school environments, and offering children opportunities for civic engagement, better preparation for life beyond primary and secondary grades by teaching life skills, and opportunities to partner with members and businesses in their local communities for a variety of volunteer and work experience initiatives.

“I really have to commend the efforts of the Irricana Ag Society in responding to community needs and opening their doors to working families who are scrambling to make arrangements for the care of their children in an economic climate where rising living costs are necessitating a significant increase in dual-income households”

Parents, who are interested in securing one of the limited spots that are available, can do so by submitting a $50.00 deposit, and all requests will be facilitated on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information please contact Monica Piros at 935-4290 or by email at monicapiros@efirehose.net.
